In this post, you’ll learn how to set up and lead a Zoom yoga class.

Due to Covid millions of people are now practicing yoga from home. The reason is that most of us are in a perpetual state of stress, anxiety and fatigue. That’s why it’s vital for yoga teachers to teach yoga classes online.

How To Lead A Live Zoom Yoga Class: A Step By Step Guide

how to set up a zoom yoga class

Step 1: Create A Yoga Lesson Plan

Teaching yoga online is a different beast from teaching normal classes. You’ll need to know your lesson plan back to front and be able to give detailed instructions for getting into and out of poses.

That’s why creating a yoga lesson plan is more vital for an online yoga class, than a normal class.

You can create professional, detailed lesson plans quickly and easily using the Online Yoga Lesson Planner. Or you can pick from one of the 100,000+ shared lesson plans, and teach from that.

Because there are so many online yoga classes, it’s important to pick a good name for your class.

Step 2: Set Up A Free Zoom Account

You’ll need Zoom so you can teach your yoga classes online.

When a student books onto a class, they will receive a link to join the class via email. When the student clicks on that link, they will be taken directly into your online Zoom yoga class.

So, go to Zoom and create a free account.

Once you’ve tested the free account out, you’ll need to purchase the Pro account ($14.99 per month) because it includes “100 participates”. With the free account, you’ll only get “1 participant”.

You might also like to download the Zoom app on your mobile device.

Step 3: Do a test run before a live online yoga class

It’s important to do a test run before going live with your first online Zoom yoga class.

Part I: Watch The “How To Teach & Record On Zoom” Video

Below is a video showing how a yoga teacher has set up her room for her Zoom yoga class. I recommend watching it several times while taking notes and following along on your own Zoom account.

And also watch this Zoom yoga class explainer video

Watching those two videos (multiple times) will give you all the information you need to start your Zoom yoga class.

Part II: Schedule

Once you’ve logged into Zoom, you’ll click the blue “schedule” button to schedule your class (fill out the name of the class, date of the class, etc).

Part III: Guinea Pigs

Email a few of your long time students asking if they’d be up for a test run to see if everything works okay. Email them the link to the class.

Part IV: Pretend

Pretend that you are teaching a proper class, and familiarise yourself with Zoom while under the “pretend pressure” of hosting an online yoga class for all your students.

Part V: Pretend Again

Your first few tries (test runs) will almost certainly be a disaster. It’s a new skill you’re learning. So, give yourself some slack, and engage that fab yogic patience of yours.

Part VI: Equipment Needed

The only other equipment you’ll need, other than Zoom, is a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

Optional Equipment:

  • Yoga mat
  • Stand for your tablet or smartphone (or use a chair)
  • Light (for the stand)
  • Statue of a Buddha next to the yoga mat
  • Plant pot next to the yoga mat

Step 4: Promote Your Zoom Yoga Class On Your Website

Below are two online yoga classes promotional blurbs that you can copy and paste onto your website. Use them as a template to get you started quickly.

Online Yoga Class Promo: Example 1

From our living room to yours, welcome to my “Hatha Yoga Online Class”. I am a qualified BWY yoga teacher with 12 years of experience teaching yoga and 22 years of self-practice. Let me guide you to explore classical asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation. The class is open to all abilities and levels. I advise you to listen to your body and adopt the appropriate variations that feel right for you. The class is gentle and rejuvenating. Through classical yoga asana, the class will help you to build strength and balance in body and mind, while offering you the opportunity to release and let go of what no longer serves you. You will cultivate stillness and ease by connecting to the body through the breath.

Online Yoga Class Promo: Example 2

If you don’t have an online booking system, use this as your promotional blurb template:

Zoom classes will be recorded and the recording will be available for 24 hours.

Live Online Classes will be through Zoom meeting rooms.

Please be aware that this is all new for all of us and there may be a few teething problems. Be patient and bear with us. We are doing the best we can to adjust to this new reality.

How to use Zoom?

  1. Use a laptop or tablet as phone screens might be too small.
  2. Downloading the Zoom app to your device makes it a better experience, but is optional.
  3. Sign in, if you can, 15 minutes before the class begins to sort out any technical difficulties, learn how to mute and unmute your microphone and become accustomed to the screen and its position.
  4. Prepare your space with a yoga mat and any other props you may need before the class begins.
  5. Make sure your microphone is muted and wait in the Zoom ‘waiting room’ to be admitted.

To allow this system to work smoothly please make payment BEFORE the class begins.

How to sign up for online classes?

Zoom Yoga Class FAQs

Is it a good idea to do a test run before a live class?

Yes! Email a few of your long time students asking if they’d be up for a test run to see if everything works okay. You can send a test link through Zoom. Pretend that you are teaching a proper class, and familiarize yourself with Zoom while under the pretend pressure of hosting a class to all your students.

How can I test my connection and audio in Zoom?

The golden rule is to “always test your connection and audio” before going live each time, even if you’ve done it a 1000 times. Issues will rear their heads from time to time. It’s not rocket science. All you need to do is log into your zoom 10 minutes early and make sure it’s working.

To test your audio, go through these steps with Zoom open:

  • Click the upward pointing arrow next to the microphone icon to open the audio options.
  • Select Test Speaker & Microphone.
  • Follow the prompts to test your speakers.
  • Follow the prompts to test your microphone.
  • When you’ve finished testing, click finish and close the window.
How early should I open the Zoom room?

I recommend opening your Zoom meeting 15 minutes before the start time. You’ll want to check for software updates, that your speaker is working, that your microphone is working, and your internet connection hasn’t dropped off.

If you live in a rural area, like me, and have slow connection speeds, you’ll need to let anyone in the house not to upload or download any videos to YouTube, or play any online video games.

Logging in early is just the same as getting to your normal classes early, it will give you time to get into the “teaching headspace”.

Should I chat with students before the class starts?

Yes. It’s just like chatting to your “early arrivals” in your normal class. Plus, it will also give you a chance to make sure the audio is working. Can you hear them? Can they hear you?

What online yoga packages can I offer?

Below are four examples of “online yoga packages” that you can set up if you have an online yoga class booking system.

Unlimited Online Yoga Monthly Pass: A one-time monthly fee to join as many “Live Online Yoga” classes as you fancy (billed monthly).

15-day Free Online Yoga Trial: This pass, exclusive to new customers, gives you the opportunity to sample Live Online Yoga in any of our classes with any of our teachers.

1 Online Yoga Class Pass: A pass to attend any single class of your choice.

4 Online Yoga Class Pass: A pass to attend any 4 classes of your choice.

1-2-1 Private Online Yoga Session: A pass for a one to one yoga session through Zoom

Should I record the Zoom yoga class?

Yes. The recording is important because you might want to share the video of the class in the future, upload it to YouTube, or sell it within your online shop.

Will I be able to see all the students who participate in the Zoom yoga class?

Yes. That means you’ll be able to give adjustments and variations of poses to students if you see they are struggling in a pose. You do, however, have the option of turning the gallery feature off, if you don’t want to see the students.

If you want to see all your students, you’ll need to use an iPad or Tablet. The smartphone screen is too small.

The video below explains how to see all your students.

If I record using my phone should the camera be front facing?

Yes. The camera should be facing you, not the screen. The video below explains why.

How much room do I need between my recording device and yoga mat?

Approximately 5 paces. The video below shows the yoga teacher pacing off five steps between her tablet and yoga mat.

Can I record using my laptop?

Yes. The video below shows that you can either use a smartphone, tablet, iPad, or laptop when recording.

Most people will use their smartphone for recording (because it’s better quality video than using a tablet or iPad) and have their tablet (or laptop) next to the yoga mat with Zoom’s “gallery view” so that they can see the students on their mats during the class.

Should I use my laptop or tablet for gallery view?

Gallery view allows you to see your students while you’re teaching the class. I recommend you use the device with the largest screen, so you can see your students more clearly. Laptops usually have larger screens than tablets or iPads.

The video below explains the importance of “gallery view” when teaching a yoga class…

If I'm recording using my laptop should I use a web cam?

Yes. If you use the camera installed on your laptop the video quality will be horrible.

If I have slow internet connection can I use Zoom's HD video quality?

No. It’s probably best to untick the “Enable HD” from your Zoom video settings.

Is it worth getting a Rode Wireless Go to improve audio quality if I record using my laptop?

Yes. If you’re going to be doing lots of online Zoom yoga classes, investing in a good quality microphone. The Rode Wireless Go is the most popular choice for yoga teachers who teach using Zoom.

The video below gives a demo of how the Rode Wireless Go works…

And this video shows a yoga teacher using it…

Below is the equipment mentioned in the video…

Should I have "mirroring" enabled on Zoom?
Yes. A mirrored image presents the view of yourself that you’re used to seeing. That means when you raise your left hand, you’ll see your left hand raised (without “mirroring enabled” if you raise your left hand, you’ll see your right hand raised).
Should I mute all the students in the class?
Yes. If you don’t select “Mute All” within the participant’s section, it means all of your students will be able to speak during the class. That’s a recipe for disaster. You could untick the “Mute All” box after the class if you have a Questions and Answers session at the end.
Should I record to the cloud?
A typical 60-minute online yoga class will take up 200Mb. The Zoom Pro account gives you 1 gig of memory, which means you have enough space in the cloud for five 60-minute classes. That’s why most yoga teachers will select “Record to this computer”.
