101 Yoga Teacher Income Streams

If you’re thinking about becoming a full time yoga teacher, and you’re not a retired banker with an infinite supply of disposable income, then it may be time to get a bit street wise about the different types of yoga teacher income streams.

Burn Out

If you’re relying on just one stream of yoga income, as most teachers do (their yoga classes), then it’s difficult, if not down right impossible to become a full time yoga teacher and still have a life. I mean, of course, you can teach 10 to 20 yoga classes a week, but that would lead to burn out within a couple of years.

Plus, the relationship with your other half has a high chance of burning out as well because, well you know why. Because your partner will come home from work and you’ll be off to teach yoga. You’ll be two ships passing in the night. That might be fine if you can’t stand the sight of your partner, but, if per chance you actually like him or her, each evening yoga class will cause a microscopic tear in the relationship that will eventually cause an irreparable rip. It might not be obvious at the time, but it’s a bit like undergoing Chinese Water Torture (victims were strapped down so they could not move, and water was then dripped slowly on the forehead. This gradually drove the victims utterly crazy. The imperceptible drip, drip, drip, drip didn’t seem like much of a torture to begin with, but it was probably the cruelest torture ever perceived by man).

Beware of the drip because they add up.

In a word, you’re looking for….

Balance

Or if I’m allowed two words, I’d say…

Life balance

Life balance is the secret ingredient for happiness. Ten to twenty classes a week may make you a full-time yoga teacher, but it will also make you unbalanced, one dimensional and addicted to yoga. In my mind being addicted to yoga isn’t any better than any other addiction, including to alcohol or drugs. Any form of addiction is a convenient distraction and robs a life of that elixir of happiness, life balance.

When I give you a “stream of income” idea, it will be actionable.  By actionable I mean, you’ll have exact steps you can take to manifest the stream of income into reality. No mater how much you meditate, or how enlightened you become, you will still need to practice karma (action) yoga and actually “do” something. Thinking about doing it doesn’t count.  Having the intention of doing it one day, doesn’t count. The only thing that counts is if you take immediate action and like Nike says, “just do it”.

Let’s take a look at those income streams…

Stream #1
One to one sessions

Most yoga teachers teach what I call “bread and butter” one to one sessions.   The bread and butter sessions are for people who come to your yoga class.   However, with a wee bit of imagination and a bit of courage to pick up the phone (or send an email), you can get lots of one to one sessions.

Stream #3
One to one yoga for amateur golfers

I give one to one session with professional golfers because, well, I used to be a professional golfer.   I know what they are going through (most have bad backs and high stress levels due to constantly competing) so I’m pretty good at.   However, you don’t need to have played golf to teach yoga for golfers.   You could approach the secretary or golf pro at your local golf club and offer to teach yoga at the golf club.

Stream #6
Group yoga for European PGA Tour Players

If you live in a county that hosts a European Tour Event, you could offer yoga sessions at the event.   All you’d need to do is call the PGA and tell them you’d like to offer yoga sessions for free at the event.   You may get a few celebrity golfers coming to you for yoga.

Stream #25
Teach a yoga class at a corporation

The great thing about teaching at niche venues is that you don’t have do any marketing at all. The students are already there. For example if you teach at a corporation, the employees are already there.  If you teach at a festival, the festival goers are already there. This “not having to do any marketing” approach is using the yogic law of less is more. Instead of spending your time and money slaving away to attract students to your “beginners class”, setting up niche yoga classes gets rid of having to do all that.

You could call up all the big businesses near where you live and offer to run a yoga class at their place of business.

Stream #26
One year courses

I set up my “traditional yoga classes” as one year courses!

Most yoga teachers have 6 yoga week courses or a “pay as you go” set up.  To me that’s setting yourself up for failure.

Here’s why?

When you have “pay as you go” classes you attract pay as you go type students. Pay as you go students rarely have the discipline to come to a weekly yoga class for a whole year.  I let each student know that coming to my class isn’t a quick fix. If they’re looking for something quick and easy, I suggest they join someone else’s class. I let them know that my class is only for students who are serious and committed to coming on a weekly basis for at least one year. You may think that I’m bonkers and need someone in a white coat to put a straight jacket on me, but hear me out.

If you don’t have the “this class is for serious students chat” with a new student, preferably on the phone before their first class, it significantly reduces the change they morph into a loyal student who religiously comes to class on a weekly bases.

Magicians such as Daren Brown know the secret I’m talking about it. It’s called auto suggestion.  A smart guy called Coué in 1876 discovered that “any idea exclusively occupying the mind turns into reality”, although only to the extent that the idea is within the realm of possibility. If you occupy your new student’s mind with the idea that the class is only for “serious students who are committed to coming weekly for at least one year”, their mind will turn it into a reality.

But, the reverse is also true.

If you occupy your new student’s mind with the idea that the class is only for “uncommitted students who can pay per class”, their mind will turn it into a reality.
