Start in a seated pose. Hike the left leg up on the left shoulder. Firmly press the leg into the arm to help fix it there. Continue to hug the arm with your leg (If your leg does not make it onto the shoulder, hold it with both hands at the highest point you can access, and breathe). Plant your hands shoulder-width apart on either side of your hips. Keep the pressure of the left leg on your shoulder. Cross the right foot over the left, hooking the ankles around each other. Your leg may slip off your shoulder (just make sure it sticks to your arm). Press into your hands. Slide your hips back along the mat and come into a gentle face plant. Gaze forward. Lift both shoulders away from the mat. Keeping your shoulders fixed, press your top leg down onto your arm to lift your hips. Kick your heels forward to straighten your legs as you squeeze your left arm with both thighs to float you into the pose. Hold. Bend knees to lower down. Repeat on the other side.
Strengthens arms and upper back. Ab and inner thighs toner. Hamstring stretch.
A) Crow pose. B) Plank pose. C) Side Plank pose. D) Straddle Side Bend pose with a twist.
Eight Angle Pose (Astavakrasana) FAQs
What are some good teaching tips for Eight Angle Pose?
Hands: “Don’t place your hands too close to your hips. They need to be about a foot in front of your hips so you can bend your elbows and lift your hips.”Â
Elbow: “If your outer elbow isn’t close to your ribs, your outer shoulder will drop too low and you will have increased pressure on it.”
Challenge: “If you want a challenge, move back to Low Plank Pose (Chaturanga) without letting the feet touch down until the end.”Â
