Overview
You’ll learn a simple formula for creating yoga Aims And Objectives for yoga lesson plans. The aims provide the overall intention for the class. They are broad and ambitious. The objectives are the specific steps you will take to achieve your aim. They act as milestones to reach the aims.

Yoga Aims And Objectives
Step 1: Aims

Step one is learning the formula for writing “aims”.

This is worth repeating in bold…

I highly recommend only having ONE AIM per lesson plan!

Any more than “one aim” per lesson plan will almost certainly result in mass confusion…for you and your students.

  • Aims are general statements of intent
  • Aims indicate the overall goals of the session
  • Aims are written from the yoga teacher’s perspective
  • Aims state what the course will try to provide
  • Aims provide a destination
  • Aims explain your intentions to your students
  • Aims enable teachers to think about student’s progress

Aim Words:  Ability. Broaden. Create. Demonstrate. Develop. Enable. Encourage. Enhance. Ensure. Equip. Explain. Explore. Facilitate. Foster. Give. Help. Inform. Instruct. Introduce. Involve. Promote. Provide. Show. Skills. Teach

Aim Formula: An aim is usually written using to followed by an action.

My aim for this class is to [action]

  • My aim for this class is to demonstrate
  • My aim for this class is to develop...
  • My aim for this class is to encourage
  • My aim for this class is to foster
  • My aim for this class is to give
  • My aim for this class is to provide...
  • My aim for this class is to teach

Yoga Aims And Objectives
Step 2: Objectives

Step two is learning the formula for writing “objectives”.

Objectives can be fulfilled in a single yoga class, over a 6-week course, over a year, or an even longer time period.

8 teaching methods that help a yoga teacher attain objectives

Demos Demo a pose or sequence.
Discussion For example, get students in a circle to discuss Mantras.
Games For example, use a yoga card deck and ask students to pick cards from the deck.
Lecture For example, talk about a meditation exercise and why it’s so effective at calming our autonomic immune system.
Reading For example, reading from a book you have about Pranayama exercises.
Repetition  For example, repeating Boat Pose or Sun Salutations sequence multiple times throughout the class.
Role-play For example, ask a student to become the teacher and demo a pose for the class.
Talk-throughs For example, talking through a Sutras handout that you give to your students.

I highly recommend only having THREE OBJECTIVES per lesson plan.

Objectives:

  • increase clarity
  • help to keep track of learning outcomes for your students
  • contribute to the achievement of the larger goals (Aims)
  • give your yoga class a clearly defined target
  • keep teachers inspired because it focuses attention on the big picture

Objective Formula

Objectives usually start with this formula:

By the end of the class students will be able to...

Knowledge Objective Example
By the end of the class, students will be able to
name two postures in Sanskrit.

Attitude Objective Example
By the end of the class, students will be able
to indicate changes they can make to their diet.

Skill Objective Example
By the end of the class, students will be able to practice pigeon pose safely.

Yoga Aims And Objectives
Step 3: Avoid Doing This

Step three is understanding what could go wrong with Aims & Objectives.

Below are some common Aims & Objectives issues:

More Than One Aim You may think you’re going above and beyond for your students by coming up with more than one AIM, but the truth is that you’ll confuse the heck out of them (and you!). Keep it simple. Keep to one AIM per lesson plan.
Tiresome Waffle Aims & objectives can become waffle and tiresome. Remember that sometimes “less is more” – that’s certainly the cause with Aims & Objectives. Try to keep to one aim, and a maximum of three objectives.
Unconnected Objectives You’ve got your one aim. Well done you! But your objectives (steps to reach the aim) don’t match up with the aim. Not so well done you! This unconnected usually only ever happens if you complicate matters by having more than one aim per class or course.
Laundry List The objectives turn into a detailed laundry list, rather than a set of significant steps (milestones) to reach the Aim.
Not Do-able Objectives The objectives are either not do-able, or what is to be done won’t achieve the desired Aim.
Rushing Aims and objectives can’t be rushed. Aims & objectives are a foundation on which the entire yoga lesson plan is constructed, so they need to be well thought out.

Yoga Aims And Objectives
Step 4: Examples

Step four is reading through these Aims And Objectives…

AIMS & OBJECTIVES SHEET EXAMPLE 1
Chair Yoga Lesson Plan

AIM

My aim for this class is to:

teach yoga using a chair.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the class students will be able to:

Practice several chair yoga exercises.

Discover the benefits of doing chair yoga in the office.

Explain to their boss two or three reasons why all the staff should take several time-outs during the workday to do a few minutes of chair yoga (e.g. increase alertness, reduce sick days, save their backs).

HANDOUTS Chair yoga handout
PROPS Chair for each student

AIMS & OBJECTIVES SHEET EXAMPLE 2
Core Yoga Lesson Plan

AIM

My aim for this class is to:

encourage the cultivation of a strong core.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the class students will be able to:

Practice yoga poses that strengthen the core.

Discover two or three benefits of strengthening their cores (e.g. take the pressure off their backs, keep spine young, reduce risk of heart attack)

Indicate reasons why a Vegan diet would help strengthen their core (e.g. reduce belly fat, reduce the desire to keep eating because fiber makes you feel full quicker than processed foods, reduce risk of cancers, reduce the risk of dementia).

HANDOUTS Core yoga lesson plan
PROPS Bring a laptop to class and show the class a short video called: Dr Oz talks about the dangers of a big waist and belly fat

AIMS & OBJECTIVES SHEET EXAMPLE 3
Arthritis Yoga Lesson Plan For A One-To-One Session

STUDENT INFO Student Name: [Student’s name]
Date: [Session date]
Time:  [Session time]
HEALTH OVERVIEW

Overview: Palindromic rheumatism, Scheuermann’s disease, sciatica on the right side, broken ankle, elbow full of metal, right hip is deteriorating, anxiety.

Palindromic Rheumatism: consists of sudden and rapidly developing attacks of arthritis. There is acute pain, redness, swelling, and disability of one or multiple joints. The interval between recurrent attacks is extremely variable and how long the attack lasts is also variable.

Scheuermann’s disease: caused by the wedging together of several bones of the spine in a row. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, fatigue, mild back pain, round back appearance, tenderness, and stiffness in the spine.

Sciatica on the right side: If the pain shoots from the lower back, bring the leg in toward the groin on the side you are not experiencing sciatica. If it is located more in your buttocks, bring in the leg in which you experience the pain. If bringing one leg in still makes you suffer from the shooting nerve pain, avoid seated forward bends altogether.

AIM

My aim for this 60-minute one-on-one session is:

to equip the student with knowledge of poses for arthritis.

A lesson plan should ideally only have one aim, but I could have been tempted to add several aims because he has so many health issues. But I kept with one aim. The client booked a pack of 6 one-on-one sessions with me. That way I could focus on one aim (e.g. poses for arthritis) per session, instead of having to cram in poses for all his health issues. That would have confused him, and me!

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the session the student will be able to:

Practice several poses for arthritis.
Practice yogic breathing to help reduce anxiety about his arthritis
Become more aware of what causes his arthritis pain to flare up

HANDOUTS Poses for arthritis
PROPS Yoga belt. Bolster.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES SHEET EXAMPLE 4
Lower Back Pain Yoga Lesson Plan

AIM

My aim for this class is to:

teach poses that ease lower back pain.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the class students will be able to:

Practice yoga poses that help strengthens the core muscles.

Discover two or three benefits of strengthening their cores (take the pressure off their backs, keep spine young, and reduce risk of heart attack).

Demonstrate why using a bolster and holding poses while supported on a bolster, can help strengthen the back, and ease lower back pain.

HANDOUTS Lower back pain yoga lesson plan.
Extended child pose handout.
PROPS Yoga belt.
