Your students will love receiving them.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 3: <\/span>Teach Sanskrit<\/h4>\n<p>Sanskrit: Adho Mukha Svanasana<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid to teach your students the Sanskrit, but make sure you make it fun to learn.<\/p>\n<p>How is that possible you may ask?<\/p>\n<p>Well, I do it by using the same memory tricks as the memory champions. All you need to do is associate the Sanskrit name with a bizarre story. The more bizarre you can make the story, the better it is for the memory.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how I ask my students to remember\u00a0Adho Mukha Svanasana is the Sanskrit for Downward Facing Dog\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cImagine you\u2019re about to head off\u00a0to work and you start singing \u201c<strong>I ho<\/strong>, I ho it\u2019s off to work we go\u201d\u00a0(triggers your mind to remember\u00a0<strong>adho<\/strong>). Then someone throws<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>muck<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(triggers your mind to remember\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>mukha<\/strong>) all over your car.\u00a0 There\u2019s so much muck that you can\u2019t see out of your window screen and almost run over a beautiful white\u00a0<strong>swan<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(triggers your mind to remember\u00a0<strong>svan<\/strong>). You\u2019re so stressed that you get out of the car in the middle of a busy road and perform Adho Mukha Svanasana.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 4: <\/span>Teach Symbolism<\/h4>\n<p>Here are some Downward Facing Dog symbolism you can bring up during the class:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fetch (what games have you played recently?)<\/li>\n<li>Friendship<\/li>\n<li>Focus<\/li>\n<li>Fun<\/li>\n<li>Letting go of the past (e.g. a loud telling off)<\/li>\n<li>Licking (or \u201ckissing\u201d for us humans)<\/li>\n<li>Living in the moment<\/li>\n<li>Loyalty<\/li>\n<li>Play<\/li>\n<li>Service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span>Step 5: <\/span>Teach Philosophy<\/h4>\n<p>During the class you could say something like\u2026<\/p>\n<p>When practicing one or more of the 30\u00a0<em>Downward Facing Dog<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>variations, ask yourself one of the dog philosophy mantras. The mantra will help you tune into dog power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dog Philosophy Mantras<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>I call upon dog power for\u00a0<strong>one pointed focus<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call upon dog power to find more time for<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>fun<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call upon dog power to prioritise<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>fun<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call upon dog power to become a\u00a0<strong>champion of service<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>and find ways to<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>be of service to my friends, family and community?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call upon dog power to be aware when a friend or family member is in need, so that I can reach out and\u00a0<strong>be of service to them<\/strong>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call upon dog power to take myself less seriously and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>wag my tail<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>for no reason in particular\u2026just to celebrate life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call upon dog power to\u00a0<strong>enjoy the moment<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 6: <\/span>Teach Benefits<\/h4>\n<p><em>Downward Facing Dog<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>is the most popular yoga pose for most yogis.<\/p>\n<p>And with good reason.<\/p>\n<p><em>Downward Facing Dog<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><strong>creates\u00a0space within your spine for\u00a0healing light to pour through<\/strong>. And if that\u2019s not good enough to get chipper about, it also: stretches &amp; opens shoulders, calms the nervous system, stimulates abdominal organs &amp; thyroid gland, helps relieve symptoms of menopause, reduces stress &amp; fatigue, therapeutic for backache, headache, infertility, insomnia &amp; sinusitis, tones arms, sculpts thighs, and will set the entire backside of your body free.<\/p>\n<p>Not bad for ONE pose, heh!<\/p>\n<p>If you simply list out the benefits to your class, you\u2019ll bore the socks off your students. That is of course, if they had any on. The way to spice up the benefits is to become a poet and use imagery words and phrases.\u00a0 Here are\u00a0some examples\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The Traditional Way<br \/>\n<em>Downward Facing Dog<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>is good for the spine.<\/p>\n<p>The Imagery Way<em><br \/>\n<\/em><em>Downward Facing Dog creates\u00a0space within your spine for\u00a0healing light to pour through.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Traditional Way<br \/>\n<em>Downward Facing Dog stretches the hamstrings<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Imagery Way<em><br \/>\nImagine a hook attached to your sacrum which is on a pulley attached to the ceiling. Well, that\u2019s what\u2019s happening to your body when you practice Downward Facing Dog Pose.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are\u00a0<a title=\"yoga teacher lesson plan kit\" href=\"https:\/\/georgewatts.org\/yogateacherstore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">101 yoga imagery phrases<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>to help your classes become more memorable to your students.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 7: <\/span>Teach Precautions<\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019ve given each of your students a Student Questionnaire (there are 2 student questionnaires within the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"yoga teacher lesson plan kit\" href=\"https:\/\/georgewatts.org\/yogateacherstore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yoga Teacher Lesson Plan Kit<\/a>) and have taken the time to become familiar with each of your student\u2019s health issues, you can give them precautions and modifications as you walk around the class observing.<\/p>\n<p>Most new teachers stay rooted to their mats when they teach a class because it feels safe.<\/p>\n<p>A rule of thumb is that you should be off your mat more than you\u2019re on it.<\/p>\n<p>Precautions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span>Step 8: <\/span><span>Teach Modifications &amp; Variations<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Download the lesson plan (top of this page) for the 30 variations and modifications of Downward Facing Dog Pose.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few variations\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Bend Knees<br \/>\n<\/strong>One of the great things about yoga is that modifications open the doors to yoga to students of all abilities. When you modify Downward Facing Dog, the physical focus is on lengthening the spine and opening up your upper back. That means you get the same benefits from bending your knees as you would with straight knees (the only difference is that you wouldn\u2019t get such a deep stretch for the hamstrings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Bend Knees &amp; Block<br \/>\n<\/strong>Bend knees and rest each hand on a\u00a0a yoga block.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Puppy Pose<br \/>\n<\/strong>Come onto knees into\u00a0Extended Child Pose (a.k.a Puppy Pose) and finish in\u00a0<a title=\"Pregnancy Yoga Genie Lesson Planner | Child Pose\" href=\"https:\/\/georgewatts.org\/2012\/08\/16\/child-pose-balasana-for-first-trimester-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Child Pose<\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Use A Chair<\/strong><em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>Your class will almost certainly have more than one student with a tight hamstrings. Here\u2019s a great modification to give them. Ask students to practice Downward Facing Dog by putting their hands on a chair (instead of the mat). The chair will allow the student to straighten their legs and get a good hamstring stretch in while keeping a long, straight spine. However, make your students aware that they don\u2019t limit themselves to only using chairs. For example, they could also use a sofa, table, bed, kitchen sink and wall. The higher the prop, the more your students will be able to straighten their legs (hamstring stretch) while still maintaining the long, straight spine that is the core of Downward Facing Dog. \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Use A Wall<\/strong><em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>Your class will also have one or two students who have wrist or shoulder injuries. \u00a0Ask them to practice Downward Facing Dog using a wall as a prop. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 9: <\/span><span>Teach Downward Facing Dog<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Here are some quick teaching tips for Downward Facing Dog Pose\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip 1 | Knees Bent<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New students with stiff backs and legs don\u2019t need to try and force their legs to be straight. The huge effort it takes to straighten the legs pushes way too much weight forward onto their hands which has the knock on effect of dropping their hips too low.\u00a0 So, when observing students who are struggling to straighten their legs, tell them it\u2019s OK to BEND their legs.\u00a0\u00a0 This \u2018bending\u2019 will help the spine to extend down from the hips and place 80% of the weight on the feet instead of\u00a0 the vulnerable hands\u2026and now the classic Downward Facing Dog form will appear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip 2 | Weight on Feet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ask your students to be aware where most of their weight is being placed.\u00a0 Most beginner students will pile 80% of their weight onto their hands. This is a big NO, NO. The hands have wee little bones in them which means putting too much weight on them can cause injury. Instead, 80% of the weight needs to be focused onto the feet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip 3 | Use hands to push weight back onto feet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The name of the Downward Facing Dog game is to get as much weight off your hands as possible and as much weight into your feet as possible. That\u2019s done by using your hands to push the weight onto the feet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip 4 | Vary the stance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ask your students to vary the width and length (more distance between hands and feet)\u00a0of the stance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip 5 | Puppy Pose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ask your students to perform puppy pose (Downward Facing Dog on knees)\u00a0and then Downward Facing Dog. Ask them to be aware of the stretch going on in their backs during both poses.
