But most don&#8217;t. The reason is that their inner voice is saying:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<em>I have a bad memory.<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Noto Sans', sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol', 'Noto Color Emoji';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We often view memory as this thing that you\u2019re either good at or bad at, as though it\u2019s some inherent quality that we either have or don\u2019t have.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019ll let you in on a secret\u2026<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re not born with a good memory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cultivating a good memory is a skill<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Noto Sans', sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol', 'Noto Color Emoji';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can improve it. And it&#8217;s a lot easier than you think.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy if you use a 2,500-year-old memorization strategy used by a Roman statesman, orator, lawyer, and philosopher called Cicero. How did he do it?<\/p>\n<p>Cicero would associate the material he memorized with visual cues\u200a\u2014\u200ain his case loci.<\/p>\n<p>As he paced his home rehearsing a speech, he would associate certain LOCATIONS within his living space with sections of his speech. In doing so, he could create a sequence of VISUAL CUES (the door, a basket, a table) to remember a sequence of topics.<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Noto Sans', sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol', 'Noto Color Emoji';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These VISUAL CUES are still used today by memory champions. And they\u2019re something that you too can use to learn Sanskrit of 101 poses in only 101 minutes.<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Noto Sans', sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol', 'Noto Color Emoji';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hmmm, you&#8217;re probably a bit skeptical at being able to learn Sanskrit of 101 poses in only 101 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>But did you know&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>We processes <strong>VISUAL INFORMATION\u00a0<\/strong>60,000 times quicker than text-based information.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The reason you think you have a bad memory is that you&#8217;ve been trying to learn by reading text. That&#8217;s what we were taught to do in school. The perfect way to store Sanskrit words is by using a detailed mental map of a town or village. The Sanskrit words you&#8217;ll be learning are in the following six categories: Anatomy, Animals, Characteristics of the pose, Deities &amp; Sages, Numbers, and Objects. Let the Sanskrit word suggest a KEY IMAGE to you.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the Sanskrit for &#8220;limb&#8221; is Anga.<\/p>\n<p>Your KEY IMAGE might be &#8220;Angela Merkel&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Concentrate on the phonetic sound of the Sanskrit, rather than the way it&#8217;s spelled. If some of your associations produce words that don&#8217;t quite match the correct pronunciation don&#8217;t worry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong>\u00a0Key Image<\/p>\n<p>Place your KEY IMAGE in an appropriate location, suggested by the English.<\/p>\n<p>You are likely to find &#8220;Angela Merkel&#8221; in the local pub chatting to her constituents. So, think of a pub you know in your chosen town (<em>if you don&#8217;t know a pub in your chosen town, but know a pub in another town, simply imagine that pub in your chosen town).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong>\u00a0Combine Key Image And Location<\/p>\n<p>Combining your KEY IMAGE (Angela Merkel) and LOCATION (pub), imagine &#8220;Angela Merkel&#8221; picking up a tankard with her arm &#8220;limb&#8221;, talking to the locals about German politics.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p>And if you struggle remembering names, you might like this&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #e02b20;\"><i>Bonus Step<\/i><\/span><br \/>4 Tricks To Remember Student Names<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Do you know the sweetest word for 99% of people?\u00a0 It\u2019s not &#8220;free&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s their name!<\/p>\n<p>Do whatever it takes to remember your students by name.\u00a0 Below are four simple tricks for remembering names.<\/p>\n<table border=\"5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Sign In Sheet<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<p><span>I have a Sign-in Sheet on the table as they come through the door.\u00a0 Everyone has to put a tick by their names or write their name if they are a new student.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After every class, I look at the Sign-in Sheet and look at all names.\u00a0 I then visualize the person while looking at their name.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Juggling Ball<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<p><span>I take a juggling ball (very softball) with me and play the &#8220;<em>Introduce Yourself Game<\/em>&#8220;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I throw the ball to the person closest to me on my right and they say their name. The person then throws the ball back to me.\u00a0 I then throw the ball to the next person. I keep doing this until everyone says their name. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s a good laugh and is a great Ice Breaker. I play the &#8220;<em>Introduce Yourself Game<\/em>&#8221; at the beginning of every 6-week yoga course.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Before Class<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><span>Before entering the venue for my class, I\u2019ll get my folder out and look at the names on my Sign-in Sheet.\u00a0 I will visualize the person\u2019s face and see myself saying, \u201c<em>Hi Jo<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Bizarre Image<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<p><span>When a new student arrives at my class and says, \u201c<em>My name is Susan<\/em>\u201d, I immediately create a bizarre image in my mind that will trigger each time I see her. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For example, I imagine Susan <strong>SUE<\/strong>ING me for not having enough yoga mats in my class. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I visualize myself and Sue in court with her pointing an accusing finger at me from the stand.
