Attention Getting Games

Attention Getters are life savers during a kids yoga class. A kids yoga class never goes 100% according to plan. It’s never happened and never will happen. It’s crucial to have lots of ways to get the attention of distracted kids. All you need  to do is learn a few of the attention getting exercises.

For example, below is the Frere Jacques attention getting exercise…

“Sing the original Frere Jacques song with the kids: “Frère Jacques, frère Jacques, Dormez-vous? Dormez-vous? Sonnez les matines! Sonnez les matines! Ding, daing, dong. Ding, daing, dong.” When they get good at the original song, change the words to: “Are you listening? Are you listening? Everyone! Everyone! If you are listening. If you are listening. Look at me. Look at me.” At the end of the chant they can snap their fingers (and or pat their heads).”

The Attention Getting Exercises Include:

  • Bell Sound
  • Clap If You Can Hear
  • Clap Pattern
  • Consequences
  • Countdown
  • Eyes On Me Chant
  • Eyes On Your Chant
  • Frère Jacques Chant
  • How Did You Do That
  • Sentence Starter
  • Smile

Magic Hand Exercises

These magic hand exercises (Kid Mudras) build self-empowerment by learning how to access and send energy where it needs to go for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being.

For example, below is the “Turtle In It’s Shell” magic hands exercise :

“Turtles have a hard shell that protects them like a shield. It’s so protective that they don’t have any predators interested in eating them. Are you ready to put your Turtle head inside your shell? Place your thumbs across your palms and wrap the fingers over the thumbs. Rest your hands palms face down on your knees or thighs. Did you know that the turtle is one of the oldest living animals. The oldest fossils of turtles are over 200 million years old. And they can live up to 100 years.”

The Magic Hands Exercises Include:

  • Giver Of Kindness
  • Owl Mudra
  • Turtle In Its Shell

Relaxation Exercises

A child’s fragile and still-developing brain is less suited to handling stress and negative emotions, such as fear, anger or sorrow which is why approximately 170,000 UK children are seen by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) each year. That’s where kids relaxation can come to the rescue.

For example, below is the “Peace Bubbles” relaxation exercise :

“Lie on your back. We’re going to send peace to everyone on our planet. Ready? Inhale deeply and on the exhale, gently blow imaginary peace bubbles into the room. As you blow out the peace bubbles, imagine they are filled with peace. Everyone in the room is peaceful thanks to your peace bubbles. Keep breathing in and exhaling peace bubbles. You’re doing great. The peace bubbles have now floated to the village or town where you live. Everyone in your village or town is peaceful thanks for your peace bubbles. Keep breathing in and exhaling peace bubbles. The peace bubbles have now floated across the whole country. Everyone in our county is peaceful thanks for your peace bubbles. Keep breathing in and exhaling peace bubbles. The peace bubbles have now floated across the whole world. Everyone in the world is peaceful thanks for your peace bubbles.”

The Kids Relaxation Exercises Include:

  • Belly Balloon
  • Body Scan
  • Compassion Field
  • Compassion Ugly
  • Elastic Band
  • Peace Bubbles
  • Sleepy Sea Star
  • Whisper Name

Standing Poses

It’s important to teach “Kids Yoga Asanas”, not adult ones. If you teach adult poses to kids, it’s 100% guaranteed to bore them. I’ve made sure all the kids poses are not only interesting, but mini adventures.

For example, below is the Alice In Wanderland (Tadasana) mini adventure:

“Imagine you’ve got a magic potion given to your by Alice In Wonderland. Drink. Wow!  You’re becoming taller and taller (stretch hands over head).”

The Standing Asanas Include:

Breathing Exercises

A child’s fragile and still-developing brain is less suited to handling stress and negative emotions, such as fear, anger or sorrow which is why approximately 170,000 UK children are seen by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) each year. That’s where kids breathing exercises can come to the rescue.

For example, below is the shooting star breathing exercise:

“Everyone knows that if you see a shooting star, you make a wish. Ready? Sit with legs crossed. Bring palms together across your heart with fingers pointing up. Gently press hands against each other and straighten back. Inhale and bring hands over head. Exhale and lower hands to sides, twinkling your fingers. Whisper the word “wish” as you lower your arms. As we’ve just seen a shooting star let’s all wish for… (e.g. world peace).”

The Breathing Exercises Include:

  • Balloon Breath
  • Feather Breath
  • Fireworks Breath
  • Fireworks Group Breath
  • Happy Sad Breath
  • Lava Breath
  • Shooting Stars Breath

I have a dark secret, but feel a compelling urge to come clean and tell you what it is…

When I first started teaching yoga, I was…well, I was taking approximately 7 hours to create one kids yoga lesson plan!

I know.  I know. How could I do such a thing?

George Watts

George Watts, BWY Yoga Teacher

I’m fully aware of the horribleness of it.  After all, that’s over 160 hours a year of my precious life being sucked into the yoga lesson planning hole of doom.  And believe me, all that planning was a real pain in the piriformis (hope you’ve remembered your anatomy and physiology)….

After over a year of my lesson planning woes, it dawned on me that the planning had become pressured, stressful and a whoppingly large energy leak in my life. I simply had to find a way to lessen the stress of lesson planning or burn out, stop teaching yoga and do something bone chillingly dull such as give businesses advice about their marketing (umm, which was my job before becoming a yoga teacher).

So, I set out on an epic mission to create a yoga lesson planning system that would shave 6.45 hours off the current 7 painful hours it was taking me to complete a lesson plan.

You may laugh at the perfectionist streak that was causing me to spend an average of 7 hours of my life energy on something as seemingly simple as a yoga lesson plan. But. And it’s a big BUT…before laughing at me too heartily, here’s my challenge to you. Time yourself planning your next class!

You’ll be shocked.

I was.

And the 100’s of kids yoga teachers worldwide who have already got their yogic hands on the Kids Yoga Teacher Lesson Plan Kit™ were also shocked.

Start timing how long it takes you to plan a kids yoga class and come back here.

Here’s how NOT to plan your yoga class…

If You Were To Spy Through A Key Hole While A Yoga Teacher Creates Their Lesson Plan, You’d Be Confronted With A Scene Of Unimaginable Horror…A Bit Like This

Key Hole Scene 1: How Not To Plan Your Yoga Class
Thumb Desperately Through Your Dog-eared Yoga Bible Book

You wake up with an immediate feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach.

You pour yourself a cup of herbal tea. You mess about for a while with lots of distractions because you really don’t want to face the inevitable (sitting on a well worn chair for hours in front of a computer trying to write your yoga lesson plan). You thumb desperately through your dog-eared yoga bible book, wishing you were outside doing something fun.

Key Hole Scene 2: How Not To Plan Your Yoga Class
Desperate Searches On Google & Through Old Yoga Magazines

You then seek salvation by flicking through 15 year old, musty-smelling yoga and health magazines. Then your waning attention drifts back to the computer and you frantically attempt desperate searches on Google such as ‘yoga lesson plan themes’.

All that sitting and pressure is forming pulsating knots in your shoulders and neck. In the end you go with what you’ve got because you can’t bear to think about it any more. And alas, you go with a mediocre yoga lesson plan. Deep down you know your students deserve better, and that there must be a better way. But you can’t bear to think about it anymore.

Key Hole Scene 3: How Not To Plan Your Yoga Class
You End Up In The Dreaded Yoga Lesson Planning Hole Of Doom

After hours of blood, toil, tears and sweat you end up in the dreaded yoga lesson planning hole of doom.

But you don’t have to stay in the yoga lesson planning hole of doom!

There is a way out!

You can use the Kids Yoga Genie Lesson Planner that is included within The Kids Teacher Lesson Plan Kit™.

Customer Support Super Hero

The Kids Yoga Teacher Lesson Plan Kit™ is a labour of love that I’ve spent 1,000+ hours developing since 2012. But you don’t have to spend 1,000 hours, or even one hour creating kids yoga lesson planning resources. Leave that to me and get on with the important job of teaching yoga.

You can also call or email me anytime asking for a “new lesson planning resource” to be added to the Kit. Usually within 48 hours you’ll receive it. For example, if you want a new breathing exercise added to the Kids Yoga Lesson Planner, just send me an email letting me know. FAQs

“Are you a fully qualified yoga teacher?”

Yes.  I’m a fully qualified BWY yoga teacher. The British Wheel Of Yoga (BWY) is the Sport England recognised national governing body for yoga.

“Is the Kids Yoga Lesson Planner compatible with Macs?”

Yes.

“Are you able to change the wording within the poses with your own phrases and explanations?”

Yes.

“Am I able to save the Kids Yoga Lesson Planner to my own drive?”

No (and yes). The software is accessible online and there is no need to download anything. You’ll be able to access the Kids Yoga Lesson Planner on multiple devices (smartphone, tablet, iPad and PC) and it won’t use any of your valuable space on those devices.   However, I’ve included the older MS Word version of the Kids Yoga Lesson Planner as a bonus, just in case you prefer using MS Word.

“Do you provide yoga lesson plans for beginner and advanced students?”

Yes. All my yoga classes have beginner and advanced students in them. That means I had to find a system that allowed me to use one lesson plan to cater for beginners and advanced students. That’s why I created the MAP section (Modifications, Alternatives & Precautions). Simply give an alternative pose to the advanced student and a modification for the beginner student. This will allow you to effortlessly turn the same kids yoga lesson plan into a beginners and advanced class.

FAQs
"Can I use the kids yoga lesson planner with IE?"

The Kids Yoga Lesson Planner cannot be used with the IE (Internet Explorer) web browser. IE is notorious for bugs in it’s coding. The IE bugs have nothing to do with the coding in the Yoga Lesson Planner. Here’s an article from Computer World explaining why the IE web browser is out of date. There are 100’s of other similar articles online. If you’re using IE, I recommend downloading the Chrome Web Browser (or Firefox, Opera, etc).

"What's your favourite cup of tea?"

OK, yes, I was tired and in need of a cheap laugh when I added this FAQ. You see, I needed one more question to make all the FAQs look nice n’ pretty circling around the meditating tiger…but I developed severe FAQ writer’s block. Thus, I went with the first question I could think of. I humbly apologise for wasting your precious time. But, hang on a minute. Why did you click to find out? You curious little devil, you. Just in case you harbour a secret fascination with my tea drinking habits. I like green tea with a hint of lemon.

“Does each asana come with recommended preparation, follow up and counter poses?”

Yes. This time saving feature will make your lesson planning really easy.

“Can I call you to ask a few questions?"

Yes.  I love chatting to my fellow yoga teachers. You can call me (George) on 02921 257770 or send an email to mail@georgewatts.org.

“Why are you giving away so much for so little?”

It’s taken me and my team well over 5,000 hours to create all the kids yoga resources within The Kids Yoga Lesson Plan Kit™. It’s a treasure trove of lesson planning resources for yoga teachers, trainees and enthusiasts. I could charge a lot more, but I want to keep it really affordable for you.

“Is the Kids Yoga Lesson Planner compatible with Smartphones, Tablets & iPads?"

Yes.

Bonus #12
Printable Kids Yoga Dice
PNG Format (2480 x 3543 pixels)

Yoga Dice

I created this yoga dice from the ABC Yoga Kids Adventure Cards (see bonus 8).  The dice has 6 sides (camel, down dog, lion, upward facing dog, frog and cobra).  You can print as many as you like.  All you need is a bit of glue and some elbow grease.  Kids love the Yoga Dice Game because it’s a lot of fun and they get to become the teacher.

Steps to create the yoga dice

1. Download the yoga dice
2. Print the template on thicker than average paper
3. Cut the template out
4. Bend all the tabs and lines to make construction easier
5. Glue it together to make the wildlife dice.

Game instructions

1. Let the child throw the dice.
2. The child becomes the teacher and performs the pose.
3.  The class copies.
4.  Give the dice to another child and repeat steps 1 to 3.

Sequence Game

1. Create four dice
2. Let four children throw the dice.
3. Teach the sequence (e.g. Camel, Upward Facing Dog,  Downward Facing Dog, Lion)

“I have been a school teacher and certified children’s yoga teacher for about 13 years. Because I believe in the importance of health for children, I’ve always integrated yoga into my daily curriculum, as well as led before and after school programs for elementary school students. On top of academic lesson planning, which has gotten increasingly more demanding in recent years, yoga lesson planning requires time, effort, and creativity. These are resources that are being spread thin. Recently, I made the decision to leave the public education field, and teach yoga full-time. It’s ironic that once I cleared some room on my plate, I stumbled upon this amazing lesson planning program! The drag and drop format makes it easy for me to see the flow of poses, and move them around as needed. I also love the plethora of choices provided in organized categories (breathing, games, seated). This keeps my lessons varied and creative. Finally, I really like the printing options. When I download the PDF, I can see a picture of each pose, benefits, contraindications, and even a link for a video demonstration! The box provided to document the time for each pose is beneficial when I’m running through the lesson before teaching it to my students; I can plan out every minute of the class with confidence. I’m very excited about my new adventures as a full-time yoga teacher, and I feel like I’ve won the lottery with this program, which is awarding me the gift of time.”
